1. Who We Are

Saor Law provides free family law advice in Ireland, including divorce, judicial separation and co-habitation disputes. For the purposes of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Irish Data Protection Act 2018, Saor Law is the data controller responsible for your personal data.

2. How We Collect Your Data

We collect your personal data through the following channels:

• •Our website enquiry and intake form
• •WhatsApp, if you choose to message us or use our WhatsApp intake service
• •Email and phone, when you contact us or we follow up with you
• •Automatically through cookies when you use our website

If you contact us through WhatsApp, your messages are also processed by the WhatsApp messaging platform under its own privacy terms. We use third-party service providers to help us operate our intake, messaging and booking systems. These providers process data only on our instructions and are required to keep it secure.

3. What Data We Collect

We collect only the personal data necessary to provide our service. This may include:

• •Your name and contact details (email address, phone number)
• •A description of your legal situation, which you provide through the intake form or in conversation with us, to help us understand your enquiry and assign the right solicitor or barrister
• •Information about your family and financial circumstances relevant to a family law matter
• •Sensitive information you choose to share, which may include details of relationship breakdown, children, or experiences of abuse (see section 5)
• •Your preferred appointment time and consultation format
• •Your consent preferences, including whether you have agreed to be contacted for follow-up, and the date and source of that consent
• •Technical data such as your IP address, browser type and pages visited (see section 12)

4. How We Use Your Data

We use your personal data to:

• •Respond to and manage your enquiry
• •Match you with an appropriate solicitor or barrister
• •Schedule and manage consultations and advice calls
• •Send you appointment confirmations and reminders
• •Where you have consented, follow up with you by email or phone and send helpful information and updates relevant to your enquiry (see section 7)
• •Improve our website and services through anonymised analytics
• •Comply with our legal and regulatory obligations

5. Sensitive (Special Category) Data

Because we provide a family law service, the information you share may include special category data under Article 9 of the GDPR, for example information about your health, your children, or experiences of domestic abuse.

We process this information on the basis of your explicit consent, which you give by choosing to share it with us, and because it is necessary for the establishment, exercise or defence of legal claims, which is the purpose of family law advice.

We treat this information with particular care, collect it only where relevant to your matter, and restrict access to those who need it to help you.

6. Legal Basis for Processing

Under Article 6 of the GDPR, we process your personal data on the following bases:

• •Consent: when you submit your details and when you agree to be contacted for follow-up
• •Legitimate interest: in providing family law guidance and improving our service
• •Legal obligation: where we are required to retain or process certain data under Irish law

7. Follow-up and Informational Communications

If you tick the consent box when you contact us, we may follow up with you by email or phone about your enquiry, send you helpful information and updates, and arrange any consultation or advice calls.

This is based on your consent. We record when and how you gave it. You can opt out or withdraw your consent at any time, by using the opt-out in any email or by contacting us at cameron@saorlaw.ie. Withdrawing consent does not affect our ability to respond to the enquiry you have already made.

8. Confidentiality of Legal Consultations

All information shared during a consultation with a Saor Law solicitor or barrister is treated as strictly confidential and is subject to legal professional privilege under Irish law. Our legal professionals are bound by the professional conduct rules of the Law Society of Ireland and the Bar of Ireland. We will never share the details of your consultation with any third party without your explicit consent, except where required by law.

9. Data Sharing

We do not sell, trade or rent your personal data. We may share limited data with:

• •Solicitors and barristers, solely to provide your consultation or representation
• •Third-party service providers who help us operate our website, messaging and booking systems, all of whom process data only on our instructions
• •Where you have given consent, a domestic violence or support service that referred you, solely to discuss your case with them (see section 10)
• •Law enforcement or regulatory authorities, where required by Irish or EU law

10. Domestic Violence Referrals

If you were referred to us by a domestic violence or support service, our intake asks whether you consent to us discussing your case with that service. We will only share your information with a referring service if you have given that consent, and you can withdraw it at any time. This information is sensitive, and we handle it accordingly.

11. Data Retention

We retain your personal data only for as long as necessary for the purposes for which it was collected, or for any longer period required by law. In general:

• •Enquiries that do not become a matter are kept for up to 12 months, then deleted.
• •Where we open a matter, the file is kept for 7 years after the matter closes. Some family law files, particularly those involving children, may be kept for longer, as issues can resurface over time.
• •Records of your consent are kept for as long as we rely on that consent, and for a short period afterwards if you withdraw it, so we can show we acted on your request.

Anonymous analytics data may be retained indefinitely. You may request deletion of your data at any time, subject to any legal retention obligations.

12. Cookies and Analytics

Our website uses essential cookies for proper functionality, and analytics and advertising cookies that are only placed with your consent. We use analytics to understand how visitors use our site, and we may use advertising and remarketing cookies to measure and improve our online campaigns. Essential cookies cannot be disabled. You can manage your preferences through our cookie banner and your browser settings at any time.

13. Your Rights Under GDPR

Under the GDPR and the Irish Data Protection Act 2018, you have the right of access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability, objection (including to direct marketing), and the right to withdraw consent at any time where processing is based on consent.

14. Data Security

We implement appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect your personal data against unauthorised access, alteration, disclosure or destruction. Our website uses SSL/TLS encryption to secure data in transit. Access to personal data is restricted to authorised personnel and legal professionals on a need-to-know basis.

15. Children's Privacy

Our services are not directed at individuals under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will take steps to delete it.

16. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or legal requirements. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date.

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your personal data, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the Data Protection Commission (DPC):
